I like food. In fact, the thought of food, i.e. what I'm preparing, what I'm serving, how much, etc. is usually a pretty big part of my day. At least, it is in my head, since I tend to gravitate toward easy recipes. Anyway, when I read the blurb for 'Brand New Flavor', book one in EM Lynley's series, 'Delectable', I was excited. I mean, hello? It's ice cream. Pretty much a deliciousness we've all eaten since we were kids. Now, I will say that these books can be read as stand alones and don't need to be read in order.
I have to admit, the very beginning description of Cameron (Cam) taste testing Jericho's (Jay) ice cream, was, well, hot, frankly. And the subsequent hookup in Jay's van, with the ice cream, almost had me dashing to a cold shower. Almost. There's something definitely in the air between these two men, but after, Jay feels like an idiot, because he had no idea that Cam is a big-time food critic, and he's just positive he'll never hear from him again. Which, unfortunately, turns out to be the truth, since Cam's ex, Eric, finds the business card and takes it, furious at the thought of Cam with someone else. With Cam frantic because he has no way of reaching Jay, and Jay still suffering from betrayal by his ex, and scared of taking his new company public, and Eric causing trouble
well, it's a wonder these guys found each other again, at all.
This is a cute, and sweet story, although the obvious predictability factor irritated me a little, along with the constant back and forth and serious miscommunication. Both of the characters are imminently likable, but I suppose I was a little frustrated that Jay didn't just pick up the phone and call Cam's office. Instead, he wallowed in his self-pity, positive that Cam could never see anything in him. Granted, Eric's interference, posing as Cam's assistant, didn't help matters, along with several other people determined to halt these two. Thank goodness for Jay's two employees, and Cam's boss, or these guys would've never figured it out.
As I said, this is a cute, sweet, story, and I would've loved an epilogue, but Cam and Jay got their happy ever after. If you enjoy food, especially ice cream, this might be the book for you.
