TA Moore’s Top 5 Favourite Destinations

Thursday May 31, 2018

Hey all! It’s been an exciting month. My new urban fantasy Stone the Crows (Wolf Winter #2) is out and I’ve been asked to talk about my Top Five Favorite….Places.

5: Paris

OK, this is going to make me sound provincial….but when I went to the Salon du Livre in 2017, that was my first ever visit to Paris. Now it’s one of my favourite places. I’ve walked miles through Paris, powered only by mocha and curiosity. It’s a beautiful, surprising city and I enjoy every minute of my time there.

Bookshop of the City: The Shakespeare and Company Bookshop is a gorgeous, top heavy little bookshop just across from Notre Dame. https://shakespeareandcompany.com/

4: Newcastle

Newcastle is wonderful city with so much art, culture, and history to enjoy. There’s the Lit and Phil in Newcastle, Durham (which had a starring role in the first Wolf Winter book, Dog Days) is just down the road, and, right where I lived, an old Shetland ferry that had been turned into a floating biker bar. How cool is that?

Bookshop of the City: Well, a little bit outside the city, but Forum Books in Corbridge is a great place to browse. http://forumbooksandkids.com/

3: Oxford

Go to Oxford!. I always visit the Ashmolean and make my way up to admire the Boxer statue, which has a brutal elegance that just enthralls me. I also never miss a visit to Pitt Rivers Museum, where I like to check that the witch in the bottle is still in her bottle.

Bookshop of the City: I do prefer a nice indie bookstore, but Blackwell’s in Oxford is a wonderful bookshop with a great wee coffee shop upstairs. https://blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/home

2: San Diego

I love San Diego because two of my best friends in the world live there, Rhys Ford and Jenn. I got my first (and only) tattoo there, I dyed my hair for the first time, and met Frankie and Guido, the mobster meerkats, in San Diego Zoo. It’s a fun place to visit, but they’re better friends to have. If they ever moved, I’d promptly replace this with their new city.

Bookshop of the City: This is actually the bookshop where a woman accused me of having a fake English accent. She was just a customer though, and the bookshop was great. https://www.mystgalaxy.com/

1: Swindon

Where I go to hang out with my other two best friends in the world. There’s five of us basically, two in San Diego, two in the UK, and me in Northern Ireland. So Swindon has a special draw for me. Mind you, Swindon is actually a great place to visit. If you’re feeling brave you can do the Magic Roundabout (which I still haven’t done!) and it’s a great hub to head to Corsham for the peacocks or Stonehenge for the…stones.

Bookshop of the City: It’s a little bit outside the city, but Octavia’s Bookshop in Cirencester is a whimsical purple delight. http://www.octaviasbookshop.co.uk/
