This was a very enjoyable audiobook with some characters from past stories written by Brad Boney.
Ian Parker is about to turn forty, and he and his best friend, Mark, decide to take a trip to Colorado to celebrate his birthday and try some legal pot while they’re there. Indulging his sweet tooth, he buys a chocolate kiss laced with marijuana and supposedly made with “magic butter.” On the way home, he awakes from a nap on the plane to discover that he’s twenty years younger. His birthday wish was granted, and he can take advantage of a chance to start over, including always wearing condoms so he won’t be HIV positive as he is as Ian.
After he calms down and with Mark’s help, once he convinces Mark that he’s really Ian, they devise a plan for Ian to assume the identity of his nephew, Ryan. They decide to say that Ian has flown to California to take care of his ailing mother. Ryan takes over management of Ian’s coffee shop, La Tazza Magica, in Austin and begins to form new friendships with people Ian previously knew and interacted with at the shop.
There’s quite a bit of juggling going on as Ian has to remember he’s in a younger body and has to watch what he says, but it isn’t until Bradley, the man of his dreams, comes into the shop that Ian sees his chance to score. Bradley is about ten years younger than Ian, and they were to go on a “friendship” date before Ian’s life changed, so Ryan makes a move on him in an attempt to get results this time. Of course it doesn’t work out for Ryan, but he does learn some interesting things about Bradley, things that Ian wished he had known before all this happened.
What’s most fun about this story is the cast of secondary characters, including Ben and Travis from The Nothingness of Ben and Topher and Stanton from The Return. Many of the characters were also in The Eskimo Slugger, a book I recently read, so I enjoyed this overlap and enmeshing of story lines. It could have been very confusing, and it could have had a very facetious ending, but it was a very good story, and I enjoyed the ending which allowed for the likelihood that everything could easily happen exactly as it did and added an element of psychic possibility.
Dan McGowan did a great job with the voices, and his narrative pacing was just right. I would recommend the audiobook version of this story to lovers of M/M romance. It’s six hours—not too long or too short—it’s just right for walking, jogging, or going about our daily routines over the course of a few days. And if you like a story with an element of the psychic, or if you’ve enjoyed Brad Boney’s other books, this one is a perfect fit.
