Intervista a John Inman, autore di Timido e di Vendetta

Buon pomeriggio a tutt* :)

Thank you very much, John, for your time, for having accepted to answer my questions and for sharing your experiences with us. I feel very honoured and lucky!

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I live in San Diego California with my husband, John.  (Two Johns, very confusing.)  I'm a full-time writer, a Vietnam vet, love to hike and take long walks, watch movies and stage shows, work in the yard, play with my cats, and read.  I was raised on a small farm in Indiana, discovered San Diego when I was stationed here in the Navy, fell in love with it, and stayed when I got out of the service.  The greatest joy in my life, bar none, is writing and hearing from my readers.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer.

It sounds cliché, but I really have been writing since I was a kid.  It's just something I always knew I wanted to do. Even so, it took me a long time to find a publisher who believed in me and where my stories felt at home.  I owe so much to Dreamspinner Press and all the people there. I hope I can keep writing for them for a long time to come.

Payback blew my mind.  How did you decide to write Tyler's story?  And did he present any specific challenges for you?

Every time I sit down to write a new book, I try to make the story different from anything else I've done. Comedy, thriller, paranormal, whatever. Some writers work great when they stick to a formula to tell their stories, but I like to shoot for something different each time.  With Payback, I wanted to explore grief, since I'd never done that before. With Tyler, I had to first convince the reader how happy he was in his marriage and how much he truly loved Spence, his partner. Only then could I make the reader believe the depths of misery the poor guy would go through once he found himself alone. Only by believing in the love Tyler lost could the reader take that journey with him, accepting the decisions Tyler would make when he was out of his mind with grief.  It would help explain to them how anger and a need for revenge would influence his feelings and decisions as well. Payback for me was an emotional story to write. I don't usually dig that deeply into angst and grief and unhappiness, so it was something new for me. Still, I think it stretched me as a writer, so for that reason alone, I guess it was worth the effort. Plus, a lot of people liked it, and that's always gratifying.

Christian Martin è sensibile, gentile e paziente. Come lo hai creato?
Christian Martin is sensitive, kind, and patient.  How did you create him?

While Payback is first and foremost a romance, because that's what my publisher deals in, I had to have a second main character that would be able to pull Tyler back from the brink.  And someone to fall in love with by the end of the book.  I've always liked the idea of the “gentle cop”, the person who deals with bad people on a daily basis, yet still maintains a grip on the goodness inside himself.  Christian played that part very well.  The trickiest aspect of using a detective as the love interest, was in not letting some of the things Tyler does in his anger and grief, make Christian in turn do something out of character for him.  What with him being a cop and all.  After all, Tyler makes some pretty questionable choices in his quest for revenge.  Questionable and illegal.   Haha, I made poor Christian do a little tapdancing in the end, straddling the line between being supportive and in love on one hand, and being a cop on the other.  Still, I think it worked out pretty well.

Vendetta mi sembra un romanzo shakespeariano. Hai approfondito i classici da giovane?
Payback seemed Shakespearian to me. Did you delve into the classics when you were young?

I've read some Shakespeare as an adult, but when I was young the classics I read were more age appropriate. I grew up with the children's classics like Black Beauty, Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Swiss Family Robinson, Gulliver's Travels, and a bunch more. I had a whole set of children's classics that I read over and over again. Like I said earlier, I love to read, and that love was with me even when I was a little kid. You know, I bought a very expensive set of those same classics for my nephews a long time ago when they were young and I don't think they ever cracked them open. Broke my heart a little bit.  I simply don't understand people who don't enjoy reading.

In Payback, how did you integrate the relationship elements of the story with the suspense elements?

Haha. Così, lo scotch.

For me, any time I'm writing suspense, it's harder than writing anything else. You really have to be in control of what you're doing. Suspense has to build slowly without feeling too contrived.  And toward the end it has to explode into a big exciting finish. That's not easy to do. Not for me, anyway. There's a lot of rewriting and replotting and scotch involved.  You know that old actor's saying “Dying is easy, comedy's hard.” Well, in writing, for me, it's exactly the opposite. Comedy's easy, and dying is hard. In writing comedy, you skip along from one gag to the next.  No problem.  A story like Payback has to be grounded in reality.  Reality has always been a problem for me.  Haha.  Thus the scotch.

Cosa ti ha spinto a scrivere Timido?
What was your inspiration for Shy?

Writing Shy was an absolute delight. I finished it in six weeks which is really fast for me. I was in the mood for some silliness, and that story opened itself up perfectly to being silly. I was able to bring the farm where I grew up into the story. I was able to bring animals into the story, like Pedro. (I had a Chihuahua at the time who was a great inspiration.) I used to be scared of the boars on the farm when I was a kid so I brought that in. There was just a lot of stuff that rang true for me in that story. Of course, the real reason I wanted to write it was because of the subject of social anxiety. I know the problem well, having suffered from it for most of my life. And I thought maybe I could make a few more people understand it if I stuck it in a book. I guess I succeeded somewhat. When the story came out, I got a lot of letters from readers as well as notes from reviewers who told me they suffered from it too and that I had captured the problem well.

In Shy, how did you approach writing the characters of Tom and Frank?

Tom and Frank were the easiest characters I've ever written. That's because they were me. Every part of them. I thought it would be fun to have two people, both suffering from social anxiety, falling in love. Getting past the first shyness. Opening up when people with social anxiety don't usually want to open up at all.  Everything is a chore for someone with social anxiety. Even falling in love creates a litany of problems. If it's hard to say hello, imagine how tough it is to proclaim your undying adoration. Yikes. I thought Tom and Frank handled it pretty well. And I still think Shy is one of the funniest books I've written.

Quanto di te metti nei tuoi personaggi?
How much of yourself do you put into your characters?

Beh, a volte, come in Timido, i personaggi sono assolutamente me.

Well, sometimes, like with Shy, the characters are absolutely me. Most of the time, however, they aren't. I approach writing the same way I approach reading. It's nice to be a hero sometimes. You can do it when you're reading by putting yourself on the page, and you can do it even better when you're writing. That doesn't mean if I found myself in the same situation as the character in the book I'd be able to swordfight or kung fu or brainiac my way out of it. But it's nice to imagine you can when you're reading or writing the story. Same with being a bad guy. Hopefully, most of the bad things you read being done in books, you wouldn't do yourself in a million years. But sometimes it's nice to imagine that you might. Just for the fun of it. Pulling yourself out of your humdrum existence for a few minutes and being someone you know you'll probably never be. So in truth, most of my characters aren't me at all.  I just wish they were.

Cosa puoi dirci del romanzo Head-on, che sarà pubblicato in Italia a novembre?
Tell us a little about Head-on, which will be released in Italian in November.

In Head-on esploro la colpa.

Head-on was another story that wasn't easy for me to write.  In Payback I explored grief.  That was the whole purpose in writing it.  In Head-on I explore guilt.  Again, that was the whole purpose of telling this story.  Head-on is about a guy who makes a bad decision and ends up spending a long time trying to live with what he's done.  In Payback, outside sources cause the problem.  In Head-on, the main character causes it all himself, not purposely, but he does.  In a way, that makes the tragedy even harder to deal with, I think.  After all, he has no one to blame but himself.  Still, even in the worst times, love can peek in now and then, and that's what happens here.  I enjoyed the characters in Head-on.  I like the way they found each other and how they overcame their faults and weaknesses.   There were a couple of minor characters I truly enjoyed writing too.  Sometimes it's those little things that make the creation of a story a whole lot of fun.

What was the first experience in which you learned that language has power?

Ero in terza media.

I was in the 8th grade. Our teacher wanted us to write a story about ancient Rome. I got goofy and wrote a commercial where a guy in a toga is selling used chariots like those car commercials you see on tv. (Don't ask me where ancient Romans got tv sets.) Anyway, one of the other kids read it and she told the teacher how funny it was and the teacher asked me to read it out loud in front of the class. Not being immune to social anxiety even then, I refused, so that student read my piece in front of the class. Everybody howled. They really got a kick out of it. And that's the first time I realized words can make a difference. I got an A+, by the way. Even old Mrs. Donahue, my teacher who looked like a cross between Methusaleh and the Crypt Keeper, cracked a couple of smiles.

How do you think you have evolved creatively?

I've just finished writing my 35th novel. I still can't believe how lucky I've been to be able to do what I love doing for so long. As for evolving, during the course of those 35 books, I think I've learned a lot. I've certainly learned a lot of technical stuff I didn't know back in the 8th grade. (Frankly I'd have a hell of a time trying to explain away those ancient roman tv sets if I tried to put them in a story now.) I've also learned a lot about dedication. Time. Commitment. I write every morning from 5 to 9 without exception. For me, that's the only way to do it. I have to stick to a schedule. It doesn't matter if in those four hours I advance the story by two sentences, or I advance the story by ten pages. As long as I advance. That's the main thing. If you just do that, and keep doing that, one morning you realize the story is finished. Just like that. Every time I write THE END on the tail end of a manuscript, I can't believe it's over. I can't believe I actually did it. I guess what it really boils down to for me, is that writing is fun. And I dearly love every minute of the process.

Cosa della scrittura ti eccita e cosa ti butta giù?
What excites you about a piece of writing and what makes your heart sink?

Sometimes you pick up a new book and you just know from page one that you're going to love the story. The pictures are clear in your head, the writing isn't stiff or pedantic, the characters seem real and interesting. That's exciting to me. Other times you're ten pages in and you have no idea what the hell is going on, but the even bigger problem is, you don't care. There's just something ethereal, for lack of a better word, in how each of us relates to the written word. Some of us like some writers, others enjoy others. It's an individual thing. Like food. Everybody doesn't like spinach. I dare say there are probably even a few weirdos out there who don't like ice cream. (Was that judgemental?) But happily, there are enough writers plying the trade for everyone to find a story and style of writing they like. The important thing is we all keep reading. Reading, like food, is life. Or at least it is to me.

Quali sono le tue ambizioni? E di cosa sei più orgoglioso?
What are your ambitions?  What are you most proud of?

I'm proud of the books I've written. I'm proud of my husband who I love very much and who is the kindest, sweetest man I've ever known. I'm proud of our home. I'm proud that I found a place for myself in the stable of Dreamspinner Press authors. And I'm proud that during the long course of my life (and God knows I'm not a kid) I've pretty much accomplished most of the things I've set out to do, and if I didn't succeed, at least I tried. As for my ambitions, I just want to keep doing what I'm doing. That's more than enough for me.

Qual è il tuo libro preferito e perché?
What is your favorite book and why?

My favorite book(s) is and always has been The Lord of the Ring Trilogy.  I pull it out every year and read it again.  In my opinion it's the most astonishing work of fiction out there. The writing is beautiful, the characters are legendary and still believable, and the deft way the writer weaves the story around a thousand plot points without once getting us lost is beyond belief.  If you dig back in Tolkien's backstory, there is even an entire world history he imagined before the story of the ring begins!  With its own languages and civilizations! And to think it was written without a computer!  My God, the years of editing and rewrites Tolkien must have suffered through to accomplish what he did.  It amazes me every time I pick it up.

Qual è il tuo film preferito e perché?
What is your favorite film and why?

The Lord of the Rings, of course! How could it not be? I still remember sitting in a theater the first time I watched The Fellowship of the Ring on the big screen. I sat there all through the final credits with tears pouring down my face. I thought sure they'd ruin it. But they didn't. Peter Jackson filmed the story perfectly. It was just like I envisioned the book all the times I'd read it.  An incredible achievement. Peter Jackson has been my hero ever since.

Quale personaggio famoso ti piacerebbe incontrare e perché?
Which famous person would you most love to meet, and why?

I've always wished I could have met Mark Twain. To sit and listen to him tell stories about being a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi. Maybe have a beer with him while he recounts his adventures mining for silver and gold in the old west. And listen to how he started writing when it was the last thing in the world he ever intended to do for a living. I guess my love for Twain came from all those times when I was a kid reading about Tom and Huck. I don't imagine Mark Twain was a particularly happy person, but I think it would have been quite a treat to have known him. It's certainly been a treat losing myself in his books.

Cioccolato al latte o fondente? Cioccolato al latte, sicuramente.
Colore preferito? Arancio.
Cani o gatti? Entrambi, gatti e cani.
Tè o caffè? Caffè.
Lato chiaro o lato oscuro? XD Il lato chiaro, sempre.

Light or dark chocolate? Light chocolate, definitely.
Favorite color? Orange.
Dogs or cats? Cats and dogs both.
Tea or coffee? Coffee.
Light side or dark side? XD And the light side, always.

A quali altri progetti stai lavorando attualmente?
What other projects are you working on at this point?  What are your plans for the future?

I just finished NIGHTFALL, my first stab at science fiction. It will be submitted to my publisher as soon as my beta readers finish with it. So basically I'm at that point between books where I don't know what to write next. I always tell myself I'll take a break since I've done so many books in a row, but I never do. I like writing too much. Plus I'm not getting any younger. I want to write while I still can. I've had a few letters from readers who have asked if I might consider writing a book with older main characters so I'm considering that. Or a mystery. I haven't done one of those in a while. I guess I'll figure it out when I start typing.

John

This might be a good time to say thanks to Reading Rainbow Books Blog.  It's been fun and I loved your questions.  I hope we'll see each other again, and a big thank you to all my Italian readers. Don't forget Head-on will be coming out in Italian in November. Yay!  (Haven't heard yet what the title will translate to.) Anyway, thanks again for our time together, and bless you all! John.

Grazie di cuore ancora, John!

John Inman biografia
Continuate a inviare i vostri lavori. Continuate a scrivere e riscrivere e poi scrivere ancora .

John Inman is a Lambda Literary Award finalist and the author of over thirty novels, everything from outrageous comedies to tales of ghosts and monsters and heart stopping romances. John Inman has been writing fiction since he was old enough to hold a pencil. He and his partner live in beautiful San Diego, California. Together, they share a passion for theater, books, hiking and biking along the trails and canyons of San Diego or, if the mood strikes, simply kicking back with a beer and a movie.
John's advice for anyone who wishes to be a writer? "Set time aside to write every day and do it. Don't be afraid to share what you've written. Feedback is important. When a rejection slip comes in, just tear it up and try again. Keep mailing stuff out. Keep writing and rewriting and then rewrite one more time. Every minute of the struggle is worth it in the end, so don't give up. Ever. Remember that publishers are a lot like lovers. Sometimes you have to look a long time to find the one that's right for you."
