A Dove's Wing

The Daily Dose package brings such individuality and creativity to each of this year's stories centering around shifters. I'm a huge fan of shifter stories in any way, shape, or form, so I was especially thrilled with Dreamspinner Press's 'A Walk on the Wild Side'. I was particularly happy when I realized this author had created a world where people knew about shapeshifters, but the clans kept to themselves on the edges of society. It makes a short story, in my opinion, easier to enjoy when there isn't the secrecy factor.

Abel is a veterinarian in a small mountain town. The typical kind of place where hunting is a big deal and sometimes small minds prevail. He is a little shocked to meet Darcy, naked, on the floor of his kitchen in the middle of the night, but once he sees his broken arm Abel puts two and two together. Darcy is the first shapeshifter Abel has ever met, but Abel is a kind and gentle man, certainly not like the humans who forced Darcy's clan to move. Those humans tried to kill them in their animal forms and even kidnapped the alpha's daughter, tortured, and killed her. Too many purist groups abound which is the major reason shapeshifters stay away from humans.

Darcy stays several days with Abel in order for his arm to heal. It doesn't take long for very strong feelings and desires to develop. Unfortunately, the bigoted, paranoid people in Abel's small town cause trouble, and Darcy has to leave suddenly to help his clan. Abel has fallen in love with the man and he doesn't know what to do now or when Darcy will be back.

A sweet, gentle, and very hot addition with an ending I adored. Thank you, Katya, 'A Dove's Wing' made my day.

This story starts out with a very dramatic scene. I love Abel's surprise as at finding a naked man in his house especially given his own state. This story is full of love and caring developing between these two men. But the ideas and upset of others is a threat to themselves.
